Visual Merchandising

I believe there are many aspects that contribute to successful visual merchandising. I learned that you can encourage purchases by attracting attention, appealing to senses and emotions, using timely themes, appropriate amount of goods, clean windows and lighting. Those techniques are key to getting customers into the store and interested in the merchandise. And not only do they help finalize a purchase—but they keep customers coming back. Customers need to enjoy the atmosphere created and be excited to enter the store. Visual merchandising can help the customer feel that emotional attachment through initially attracting them or catching their attention. This hopefully creates a customer loyalty—which helps ensure future success for a store.

It’s very important visual merchandising is executed correctly. The last thing that’s wanted is to confuse the customer about the merchandise or create a negative reputation for the store’s image. An accurate, clean, interesting theme, without clutter that’s targeted to the correct type of customers is what needs to be achieved. If this is achieved, it can help a store’s reputation and increase sales. Visual merchandising should never be overlooked and should be continually perfected.

Environmental Effects on a Business Analysis

A fashion company does not exist in a bubble. It can be greatly influenced by a variety of external factors. These factors can affect every aspect of a business from its philosophy, employees, size, product, etc. External factors that impact a business include economic, social, political/ legal and technological environments.
I related these effects to a small, independent fashion retail boutique I held an internship at.

Fashion Forecasting Report

In 2011, I conducted a fashion forecasting report that includes everything from current trends and designers to projected future trends and future popular designers. I've split my report into three sections:

Every Spring, the Fashion Design Society holds a fashion show showcasing student designs. We made a display to market the show, and also designed the backdrop for the show.

My internship at Belyst Boutique allowed me to conduct the front window displays for the months of May and August.

Customer Profile

We were given a fictional department store called Perry's, located in Fredricksburg, Virginia.
Perry's has 3 different store locations (A,B and C). Based on the store area demographics and personiality reports, I conducted an accurate customer profile for each A, B and C store.

Buying Report

In our professional buying class, we were to create our own fictional store. My boutique, Joe's Menswear, specialized in Menswear. For our store's success, we conducted a 6 month plan (August-January) from personally researched trend reports, purchasing plans (by classifications and subclassifications), MD plans, S-S Ratio and BOM and Assortment tables.
